Special Applications World Service is very configurable - we have never come across an application we couldn't handle within it. Nevertheless, there are times when things can be made more convenient for the users by the use of a separate free-standing application. Most commonly, this is true when there is a need for a lot of very specialised validation to be performed in real-time on the screen and for many sun-totals to be created as the user enters each value. Look at these two examples:
These are both time-sheet data-entry systems. The first is meant for individual employees and the second for a departmental manager. Both applications have very special actions built in to them but they are radically different. The whole concept of one is different from the other as you can see from the screens above. Although these applications are serviced by programs other than the standard World Service data-entry and reporting system, they are still fully integrated. The data created by these applications is stored in the central database and is accessible by the standard data-entry system for viewing, modification and reporting. More importantly, the data is accessible to the payroll system so that time-sheets entered via these application will automatically be paid (subject to authorisation). In fact, once the information has been entered, it is treated exactly the same as any other information. Apart from looking at the audit logs, there is no way of telling whether it was entered via a special application or via the standard data-entry system. Needless to say, the security features apply to these applications in just the same way as the standard data-entry system. This is because all World Service applications interact with the database only via the HR Server and none of them go through a "back door". Back |
